  1. true
  2. true
  3. false
  4. true
  5. false

Explanation:

Static electricity is the build-up of charge on a solid’s surface and is a potential risk factor for fires and explosions in the OR.

How the charge is built up?

When two different materials come into contact, there is a redistribution of electric charges at each surface wherein electrons move from one material to another, balancing the charges to reach an equilibrium. Rubbing or frictional charging generally increases the rate of charge transfer.

When separated, the charge build-up stays on the surface and does not move, hence called STATIC.

The main prongs of safety against static charge are:

  1. Using antistatic materials (which prevent or resist redistribution of the charge)
    1. The clothing and linen used during surgery are made from cotton (antistatic).
    2. The OT floor is made up of antistatic material that is usually a poor insulator and conducts the charges to the earth. Therefore, it protects from static charge build-up and reduces chances of electric shock as well.
    3. The shoes worn by OR personnel should be antistatic (prevents static charge build-up) but with high impedance to current flow preventing electric shock (by preventing current flow through the body to the earth).
  2. Maintaining humidity to prevent dry air circulation (dry air greatly increases the build-up of static charges). Recommended humidity in OR is between 20 and 60%.
