The increase in CO is well established by 5 weeks of gestation. Both stroke volume and heart rate increase, the end result being a 40-50% increase in cardiac output by the third trimester (maximal at 24 weeks).

The maximum cardiac output associated with pregnancy occurs during labour and immediately after delivery. Immediately after delivery, it can be as high as 80% above average (before the onset of labour) and 150% above pre-pregnancy levels.
