  • Physiological dead space is the total volume of airways not participating in the gas exchange process (anatomical + alveolar dead space). It can be calculated using Bohr’s equation.
  • The typical volume in an adult is about 2ml/kg or 150mls.
  • Anatomical dead space is the volume of air in the conducting airways that does not take part in the ventilation.
  • Extends from the nares to the 16th generation /terminal bronchioles (lacking respiratory epithelium).
