Explanation:

Critical temperature: it is the temperature above which a gas cannot be liquified, irrespective of the pressure applied. below the critical pressure. Any gas with a critical temperature below the room temperature can be liquified.

  • Non-liquefied gases are also known as compressed, pressurized or permanent gases. These gases do not become liquid when they are compressed at normal temperatures, even at very high pressures:  oxygen, nitrogen, helium and argon.
    • Oxygen       –118oC
    • Nitrogen     –146oC
    • Hydrogen     –240oC.
  • Liquefied gases are gases that can become liquids at room temperatures when they are inside cylinders under pressure: Anhydrous ammonia, chlorine, propane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide.
    • CO2                      31.1oC
    • N2O                    36.5 oC

Critical pressure: pressure required to liquefy a gas at its critical temperature.

Poynting effect (overpressure effect) – the critical temperature and pressure of a gas may be affected when it is mixed with another gas. For example, in a cylinder of Entonox, the new critical temperature of nitrous oxide (known as the pseudocritical temperature) changes to –6oC (the molal average critical temperature and pressure of the mixture components).

The major components of air are permanent gases and hence it cannot be liquified at room temperature.
