Explanation:

Atropine is a naturally occurring belladonna alkaloid, derived from Atropa Belladonna (the deadly nightshade plant). It can cross the blood-brain barrier and can produce central effects in high doses. A dose of 3 mg produces complete vagal blockade which may manifest as:

  • Bronchodilatation and a decrease in bronchial secretions.
  • Tachycardia, dysarrythmias
  • Decreased tone of the lower oesophageal sphincter.
  • Inhibition of Salivary (dry mouth) and gastric secretions with delayed gastric emptying
  • Ocular changes
    • the normal pupillary reflex is abolished.
    • Mydriasis and cycloplegia (photophobia and paralysis of accommodation).
    • Minimal effect on intraocular pressure in normal eyes but in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, dangerous rises in intraocular pressure have been reported.
  • CNS changes (the central anticholinergic syndrome)
    • Excitation (restlessness, delirium, disorientation and hallucination), followed by generalized CNS depression.
  • Urinary retention
  • Temperature
    • The inhibitory effect on the sweat glands and increase in basal metabolic rate can lead to a rise in body temperature.
