• Molecules containing dissimilar atoms will absorb infrared radiation at specific wavelengths and can be identified and their concentration measured.

• Absorption is according to the Beer-Lambert law (logarithmic dependence between the transmission of light through a substance and the concentration of that substance).
• Usually, the generated infrared radiation is focused through a chopper wheel that has a number of narrowband filters (specific to the agent to be measured) to select specific infrared wavelengths. Hence, multiple agents can be measured at the same time.
