- Lactate is made in skeletal muscle and red blood cells. When oxygen supplies are limited pyruvate is reduced to NADH to form lactate. The reaction is catalysed by lactate dehydrogenase. It produces two molecules of ATP and generates NADP, which sustains continued glycolysis in skeletal muscle and erythrocytes under anaerobic conditions.
