Explanation:

  • A 2 by 2 contigency table is an integral part of the Chi-square test designed to analyze categorical data. That means that the data has been counted and divided into categories. It will not work with parametric or continuous data (such as height in inches).
  • The test compares the observed data to a model that distributes the data according to the expectation that the variables are independent. For accurate analysis, it is assumed that each observation is independent of all the others (i.e., one observation per subject).
  • In a contingency table it is customary to use rows for treatments/interventions and columns for outcomes.
  • Upper row usually has the new or studied group while second row has control group. These categories are mutually exclusive and exhaustive. Participation in one category should not entail or allow participation in another. In other words, the data from all of your cells should add up to the total count, and no item should be counted twice.
