Cardiology, Course Material

Cardiovascular physiology for EDAIC/FRCA. The most important yet exhaustive topic.

The CVS forms the bulk of any post-graduate anaesthesia examination course material, the same is true for EDAIC/FRCA. Questions are often asked in multiple contexts, in both parts, and are not restricted to Cardiovascular division alone. In this cardiovascular physiology module, the topics are covered under multiple subheadings and due emphasis is given on covering the details required to crack both part-1 and part-2. Students must try and understand the topics in-depth and memorize the graphs by heart.

Chapters included in this module:

  • Relevant cardiac anatomy
  • Pacemaker cells and the cardiac action potentials
  • Control of heart rate
  • The cardiac cycle
  • Ventricular pressure-volume relationship
  • Frank-starling equation
  • Pressure and flow calculations
  • Systemic and pulmonary resistance
  • Central venous pressure
  • Pulmonary artery wedge pressure
  • Coronary circulation
  • Physiology of circulation
  • Venous return and capillary dynamics
  • Vasomotor centre and circulatory control
  • Important cardiovascular reflexes
  • Valsalva

The Clinical cardiology module will be uploaded afterwards. Frequently asked MCQs and Viva questions with relevant explanations, wherever needed, will be uploaded as the third and final cardiac module.
This is an exhaustive topic and students often find it very difficult to grasp the concepts laced with complex graphs and equations. We have tried to make the course material simple and understandable, yet covering the majority of the syllabus required for exam success.

Your input will be indispensable in making our course material more student-friendly and include any other topics that we have missed while curating the cardiovascular physiology module.
