Cardiomyopathies: classification, pathophysiology and anaesthetic implications of the disease.

ESC definition of CMP: cardiomyopathies are a group of disorder of the heart muscle, either inherited or acquired, in which myocardium is structurally and functionally abnormal, in the absence of any coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular heart disease or any congenital heart disease sufficient to cause the observed myocardial abnormality (ESC,2007).

AHA definition of CMP: A heterogeneous group of diseases of the myocardium associated with mechanical/ electric dysfunction that usually (but not invariably) exhibit inappropriate ventricular hypertrophy or dilatation and are due to various causes that frequently are genetic. The AHA definition includes channelopathies in contrast to ESC.

Cardiomyopathies are either limited to the heart or form a part of generalised systemic disorders and can practically affect people of all ages.
